The Making of 1/7 Kanu Uncho DVD Jacket Edition

  Day 1 (Pinning) > Day 2 (Test Fit) > Day 3 (Putty) > Day 4 (Priming) > Day 5 (Painting) > Day 6 (Touch-Up)

Disclaimer: The following are the in progress shots and methods that I took to get 1/7 Kanu Uncho DVD Jacket Edition garage kit completed. Note that this is my third garage kit and did lots of screw up here. Only use this as a reference at your own risk.

Day 6 (Touch Up)

Problem Round 1

The paint job on this kit is plague by tons of problems. First, the primer peel off when the masking are removed.

Sigh. Yellow was over-painted and the masking tape is not giving me a perfect line. This is fixed by hand painted back the correct color.

Solution Round 1
Primer is hand painted back to the blouse. Her blouse is then painted with dark gray for shading and then misted multiple layers of very thin white on top.

I am trying to be smart here and try Masking Sol to mask the lines to paint her socks. This lead to the next round of problems.

I am using Masking Sol to mask the area around her eyebrow and then sprayed with sky blue.

Her eyebrows mostly covered by her fringe and I am choosing a lighter blue to bring it out.

Problem Round 2
Masking Sol is extremely difficult to remove. I almost scream out of frustration when the paint peeled off along with masking sol.

I also notice that Masking Sol will slightly tint the paint. I assume it is the thinner it uses. I tried hand paint the primer and then the flesh tone. It is ugly and that leave me no choice but to re-paint.

Solution Round 2
The surface is sanded then prime and then sanded again until the paint is leveled.

Lastly, it is then prime and then painted again with the same procedure; flesh, shadow, highlight and then misted with flesh.

Paint peeling is a tragedy. Avoid at all cost!

Painting Shoes and Eyes
I am switching my masking strategy here.

I am falling back to the conventional masking tape and for the large area of leg, I am using cling foil. This way I minimize the chances of paint peel on her leg.

For her eyes, I am using pigment pen and Gundam markers.

The last step is the final assembly by using the usual Epoxy Glue and Super Glue.

The final completed model can be seen here.
