The Making of 1/6 Mia Alice

Groundwork > Painting > Custom Base

Disclaimer: The following are the work in progress shots and technique that I took to get 1/6 Mia Alice resin kit built. Note that this is my trial by error method to build a resin kit and might not be the best way. Only use this as a reference at your own risk.

This is actually my second attempt in creating a custom base.

A photo frame is use as a mold for the base. I am taping the frame with masking tape so that it is easier to remove from the molding later.

The gaps behind the frame is taped to prevent leakage.

The initial attempt is using wall putty. Wall putty is too soft, brittle and cracked when dried. It was a failure. This time round, I am using harder stuff that is white cement (or plaster of paris) for the molding.

The plaster is mixed with water into a thick paste and then pour into the frame.

You need to shake the mixture slightly to set it in place.

It is then kept at a level surface and left overnight to dry.

Holes are drilled and the figure was test-pin to the base.

Note that the material for the base is heavy and able to support a sixth scale figure that are pinned to the corner without tipping over.

Also note that labels are marked with a pencil on the base.

The labels are then engraved with a rotary tool.

The base is too bland. I am cutting some plastics sheet and glue it on top of the base. This should give some details to the base.

The base is then painted with acrylic black then gray. Details are added on with oil via washing and drybrushing.

Finally, the engraved label is colored with oil paint (titanium white). Additional rust / dirt is added on. Oil color that I used here is black, burnt sienna, burnt umber, yellow ochre and titanium white.
