The Making of 1/8 Rain Mikamura

Painting Eyes
Painting her face can be said to be the most difficult task. Basic color is painted with flesh tone left over from 1/7 Kazami Mizuho White Bikini. Flesh, Shadow, Highlight then mist with Flesh and then Clear. She is a 1/8 scale figure and her eyes are quite narrow and small. I believe there is only 0.25 cm2 (relatively the size of a red bean) for me to work on. Airbrushing here is not feasible and all of her face paint job is done via hand painting.

Firstly, the liquid mask is peeled off then black lining is drawn encircling her eyes. White is use to patch the over-painted black. Irises are painted with Earth. Her eyelashes, the black circumference, and the dot on her iris are painted with a 0.2 pigment pen.

Eyebrow is painted with earth, the color of her hair. A little of Air Superiority Blue, White and Flesh is mixed to paint her eye shadow.

Ear Ring is painted with yellow as base coat and then Gold on top of it.

Mouth is painted with White for the teeth and then Pinkish Red for her lips.

Body
The default flesh tone method is applied here (flesh, shadow, highlight, flesh, clear). It is then masked with blue tack and masking tape for paint silver on her collar.

Legs & Stocking
This is an interesting twist from the sculptor. I do not remember Rain wearing leg stocking in the anime. Moreover, it is illogical for a normal lady to wear an ultra short skirts with exposed leg stocking.

Anyway, basic flesh painting is applied. Masking is done to expose the stocking area. A mixture of Wood Brown and Clear is misted on top. The translucency of the stocking is controlled by how many layers of the mixture are applied.

For the band at end of her stocking, Earth is applied.

Arms & Shoulders
Her arms and shoulders consists of 2 color zones. Flesh is painted on first then masked to paint the exposed areas (dress) with silver. It is then top coated with Clear Red and then Clear.

Metallic Dress
The painting guide shows Rain's dress in flat red. In order to spice her up, I tried giving her dress a metallic treatment. Silver is painted first and then misted with Clear Red. Another layer of clear is coated to ensure a shinny surface.

One drawback of this technique is that the paint job cannot be patch with hand painting. It must be airbrushed.

Hair
The front portion of her air comes with a hair band. The hair band is painted silver as base and then sprayed with yellow. Note that I have misted Black on the shadow area while the extra yellow paint is sprayed on the highlight for gradation.

Shoes and Waist Pouch
White shoes? It is too boring. I tried spicing it up with a blue gradation, a method used to paint Gundam White. Base coat is Surfacer Base White 1000, Sky blue mix with White and Air Superiority Blue for the gradation. White is then misted on top of it again to blend the color.

Note that the gradation on the photos below is a bit strong. It is because white is not misted on top of it yet. Check out the completed model for the actual effect.

Jacket
Inner layer of the jacket is painted with a mixture of Air Superiority Blue and White.

The outer layer of the jacket is painted with a mixture of Air Superiority Blue, Blue, White and few drops of Deep Green. This mixture is an eyeball process.

The inner linings are hand painted.

Accessories
Rain got tons of small accessories part of it are as shown on the left.

The belt buckle and zipper are hand painted with silver.

The gun and pouch is airbrush entirely in Earth. The gun is then hand painted with Metal Black.
