Story
Macross Zero is an anime prequel OVA to "Super
Dimension Fortress: Macross" consisting of five
episodes. It is set nine years after the fall of an
alien spaceship on Earth and one year before Space
War I, the first large-scale extraterrestrial war.
The alien space ship, which would later be rebuilt
and rechristened SDF-1 Macross, caused the formation
of U.N. government and helped trigger the U.N. Wars.
The story is centered around a U.N. F-14 pilot named Shin Kudo. He is attacked by strange enemy aircraft that can transform into robots. Crashing down, but surviving, on Mayan Island he learns that this remote island and its peaceful native inhabitants hold a great secret linking them to the alien space ship and would become the focus of the war, whether they like it or not.
Roy Focker, a major character from the original Macross also makes an appearance in this series. He is one of the first test pilots for the development of the variable fighter by the U.N. Forces. In 2008 he is deployed with the Skull Team aboard the stealth carrier Asuka II (CVN-99) to the South Pacific and flies the VF-0 Valkyrie Fighter, in battle against SV-51s of the Anti-U.N. Forces. The work done on the VF-0 helps the coinciding development of the VF-1 Valkyrie.
Valkyrie VF-0S is piloted by Roy Focker whereas VF-0A is piloted by Shin Kudo.
Packaging
The item is package in a very large windowed box
that open revealing its contents. All contents are
kept in a main plastic tray. This is a very
collector friendly packaging where there are no
twisters wire and cello tape use to secure the
contents.
The following are the list of contents.
- 1 1/60 scale VF-0S in Fighter mode
- 4 missiles (pack of 3)
- 2 armor piece
- 1 in-scale Roy Focker pilot
- 1 gun pod
- 1 clamp for Fighter
- 1 clamp for Gerwalk
The package includes a decal sheet and one 20-pages instruction manual printed in black and white. These items are wrapped in a plastic bag tapered to the back of the box.

Fighter
I am confuse when Yamato announced that this item is
in 1/60 scale but then the pricing is at a 1/48
scale VF-1 Valkyrie. Yamato has an older 1/60 scale
VF-1 line. How could they charge a small 1/60 VF-0
at the larger 1/48 scale pricing?
The design of the plane is base on the F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. Most of options and gimmicks on this item are centered on the fighter mode.
The following are the list of gimmicks on Fighter mode.
- armor piece attach to body via magnet
- cockpit opens
- full detail and working landing gears
- working air brake
- gun pod attachable to fighter fuselage or extends into gun mode
- 2 ordinance bay on each wings (total 4)
- air vent detachable revealing jet fan

Gerwalk
The fighter plane is transformable to
Gerwalk mode, a half plane half robot mode. It
is a little tricky getting it to stand still in
this mode.

Battroid
Battroid mode is the robot and third form of
a VF-0. Similar to a 1/48 VF-1, it comes with
good articulations on all limbs. The
transformation sequence to this robot form does
not require the legs to be detached as in the
smaller 1/60 VF-1.
The hands are very detailed. Aside from the index and fourth finger that link together, all other fingers move individually. As in Gerwalk mode, the hands could not hold the gun tight enough.

Metal Composition
For a 16.8K item, I am expecting some good
amount of metal on it but to my disappointment, 90%
of the figure is made of plastic. There are metal on
the screws, the swing bar seen during transformation
and some unseen metal embedded inside both legs.
Both legs are not that heavy and I suspect there are
only a bare minimum amount in it.
Conclusion
A very detailed item and the transformation
sequence is faithfully reproduce according to the
anime. It comes with not a plenty but good enough
accessories. Metal is scarcely used and might not
worth the price it demanded.
This item is purchased locally at Berjaya Timesquare.
