Bandai release of SIC Volume 23 in May 2004 was the debut release of characters from Kamen Rider Ryuki. Ryuki was a slight departure from tradition in the series, as he is an armored knight, keeping the theme of the show, rather being a gruesome-looking insect like other SIC figures.

The basic core body was very well design with many articulation joints hidden well from sight. Vol.23 was one of the convertible set where Ryuki can change into his "Survive" mode. Bandai included all new parts for the Survive version of Ryuki and used only the core body so the figure looks great in both modes.

The sculpting is well done with some nice features like a flip-open visor. Other standard S.I.C. features like die-cast henshin belt complete with removable ‘Vent Box’ and clear lenses. The set came with full size Dragreder monster figure with various parts removable and used as weapons by Ryuki.

This item was purchased from HLJ.

Ryuki Figure
At a glance, I can see that this is not a standard SIC figures. This figure is using a much-improved body allowing it to pose in many ways. A good example will is the feet slant sideway via a new articulation point that complements the standard double ball joint on its feet. Almost all articulations are ball jointed. Paint application is superb and the re-sculpting work is excellent. I really like the idea of Bandai to focus on putting tons of details while retaining Ryuki's original outlook. The result is simply awesome.

There are loads of gimmicks on this figure. Let us talk about its arsenal. As seen in TV series, Ryuki comes with tons of power-ups via Vent cards. The very first set of his arsenal will be his sword and hand shield (it also act as his Vent Card reader). The sword is made in metal. The hand shield sculpted with a theme of a dragonhead, where it can slide outwards to reveal a Vent Card reader. The card is kept at his belt buckle where it is easily removed and slot into the reader for various power-ups. The next weapon will be Ryuki's very own flamethrower, sculpted in the shape of a dragonhead itself. A fist and an arm guard had to be removed to attach this flamethrower. The jaw is moveable revealing a hidden flamethrower gun barrel. Another Ryuki power-up comes to be his defensive form where he has two dragon shields attached to both side of his shoulder. The shield comes with 2 moveable little dragon feet each. His shoulder pads have to be removed in order to attach these shields onto the figure.

In short, Ryuki comes with a good range of arsenal. There are dragon shields, 1 hand shield, 1 flamethrower and a metal sword. Another great gimmick is all these weapons form a part of Ryuki's very own Dragreder.

The Dragreder is the name for Ryuki's own monster. As the story goes, each Masked Rider made a contract with a monster in order to lend its power in the mirror world. Ryuki's is a red fire dragon. In this release, the red dragon is form by 2 body parts included in the package. Each portion comes with 5 segments and all ball-jointed together. Once both parts are joined, the body is twisted so that the pinholes for the shield are facing downward. The shields act as the dragon belly and feet. The flamethrower, which is the dragonhead, is attached on one end whereas the sword forms the tail on the other end. This is definitely a very cool feature.

There are a few more gimmicks that I seen on this release. One of them is the moveable visor that opens to reveal Ryuki's clear red eyes.

For those who is familiar with SIC figure, one do notice that the usual figure always comes with armor pads that made from soft rubber. These pads usually attach to the body by sticking it to the body and always have a tendency to pop out or fall off. Ryuki is a convertible figure and there are a quite a number armor parts to be attached or swapped. I do see that Bandai tried to address this issue by having pinholes all over the body. These holes are to secure the armor pads onto the figure. I believe the intention works but I do see that parts still fall out during play although not as much as the usual SIC figures.

Once Ryuki is converted to Survive Mode, it does look fancier and yet retain more or less its articulation. The details are intricate and the color scheme is interesting. However, I still prefer the normal look and feel. It comes with one weapon, which is a gun plus sword. The gun comes with a moveable jaw like device, a compartment for vent card. The sword blade folds out to convert the gun to sword mode.

Conclusion
This SIC Volume 23 is a breakthrough release of SIC. The re-sculpting works comes with a detailed armored figure instead of making it monster like. The improved body joints really bring out more possibility on posing. Moreover, the tons of weapons and the Dragreder really make this irresistible for a SIC collector.
