Story
Doraemon is a Japanese manga by Hiroshi Fujimoto, pen name Fujiko F. Fujio, about a robotic cat traveled back in time from the future to aid a schoolchild, Nobita Nobi. The stories first appeared in January 1970 and it is now perhaps the most famous manga character in Japan and in most Asian countries. His popularity can be said equivalent to Mickey Mouse.

Doraemon was originally sent back in time by Nobita's great-great grandson, Sewashi, in order that his descendents reap the benefits of Nobita's success one day rather than be burdened by the considerable financial debts, which his incompetence has led them to suffer in the original timeline.

The stories are formulaic, usually focused on the main character of the story, Nobita Nobi. Doraemon possesses a four-dimensional pocket from which he can produce all manner of futuristic tools, gadgets and playthings from a future department store. Nobita Nobi, a poor athlete and scholar, who is weak-willed, lazy and beset by the local bullies, inevitably comes crying to Doraemon for some device to gain revenge, fix his problems, often-involving academic failure, or show up the local rich boy (Suneo) who parades his acquisitions to arouse Nobita's jealousy. Nobita usually goes too far, and, despite Doraemon's best intentions and the technology of the 22nd century, gets into deeper trouble than before. Failing that, Nobita's friends steal the gadgets and end up misusing them. However, at the end of the day, there's usually retribution to the characters who end up misusing them, and a moral lesson is learnt.

What makes Doraemon so lovable is that he is not perfect, despite he is supposed to be an "omnipotent" robot from the 22nd century. Doraemon has his own weaknesses such as his insatiable love for Dorayaki, a Japanese treat that is filled with sweet bean paste (and this in fact is often exploited by Nobita and his family/friends to persuade Doraemon to do something that he is reluctant to do), his fear of rats (because a robotic rat bit off his ears), or his tendency to panic during emergencies (characterized by him frantically trying to pull out a very much needed tool, only to produce a huge assortment of unrelated household items). He also has a wide variety of expressions, from the classic, wide-mouthed grin to extreme anger. This serves to make him all the more realistic and approachable to audiences of all ages.

Comment
Most of the Asian kids are exposed to some form of Doraemon and I am one of them. As a kid, I have read, watched and grow up on Doraemon in a way more than Mickey Mouse. It always brings back a nostalgic feeling and always a smile to see the blue robotic cat with a big fat smile.

Gacha Gacha Doraemon 2006 Movie Version is actually a second release prior to its initial release on September 2005, featuring gadgets from the 30th Anniversary Movie, Nobita's Dinosaur 2006. This 2006 movie is actually a remake of the first full-length movie, Nobita's Dinosaur (1980), where at that time I clearly remember have watched it as a primary school kid.

The story is about Nobita finds a fossilized dinosaur egg by accident, and with the help of Doraemon's tools, they hatched the egg and began raising the dinosaur. Knowing that they cannot keep the dinosaur forever, Nobita was forced to send it back to prehistoric times where a group of hunters from the future threatens to endanger the dinosaurs. Determined to save the dinosaurs from the claws of the hunters, Doraemon and gang returns to the past and sets out in a prehistoric adventure.

Figure
The item is release to commemorate its 30th Anniversary Movie, Nobita's Dinosaur. The figure is the exact item with the September 2005 release and a much better Gachapon machine comparing to its first 1979 release. All gadgets are different except for bamboo-copter and time machine capsule toys. The 3 other pair of eyes are of new design except for the basic pair of normal eyes.

Similar to prior release, the figure is made of 90% metal with the exception of legs, hands (white part), nose, tail and bell. Doraemon comes with some simple articulations where its head rotates and both arms moves up and down.

As you can see, this is no action figure. What make this fun is its "Gacha Gacha" feature, a name derived for being a Gachapon (capsule toy) machine. Doraemon's Dogu (gadgets) can be kept in the provided 10 capsule containers. The Gachapons are inserted into Doraemon via a "trap door" at the rear of his big head then shake the figure with a "Gacha Gacha" sound. Pulling its tail will open his Four-Dimension pocket and release a random Gachapon one at a time. With 16 different capsule toys, this gives the endless thrill of never knowing what you will get from Doraemon 4-D pocket!

Beside the capsule toys, this release comes with quite some items that can be play with Doraemon figure. The toolbox is can keep the large Brontosaurus and Momotaro bag. Some items can be place on his right hand or its head via magnet. Hatched Dinosaur eggshell, "P" Cap, Dino Egg and Brontosaurus can be place on his head.

As seen in comic, you can change Doraemon expression by swapping his eyes. A total of 4 set of eyes plate provided and secure to the figure via magnet. Pulling Doraemon's nose will conveniently remove the eyes for swapping.

Conclusion
This is an excellent item just right for Doraemon fans and kid that grew up with Doraemon. Put one on your shelf and "Gacha Gacha" your Doraemon once in a while to bring a definite smile.

This item is purchased in Low Yat Plaza.
