Smokescreen is a car-to-robot Transformer in
tradition to the previous releases from the last two
decades; represent an interesting shift for the
Transformer line. The most important differences are
this is a very realistic rendering of actual cars.
Moreover, when it is a car, it has none of the
toy-like quality of previous offering, instead being
a gorgeous display model with complete engine and
cockpit details. Featuring the transformation into
Subaru Imprezza WRC 2003 rally car, comes with 2
varieties of markings variants; either Tommy Makinen
(#7) or Peter Solberg (#8), the actual rally drivers
of the two main teams in WRC 2003 competition. The
version I got is marked number 8, Peter Solberg.
Binaltech has 2 different manufacturers, which are Takara and Hasbro. Takara geared towards releasing this line as a collector's item; where as Hasbro, its American counterpart, marketing this series as "Alternator", sticks to tradition of Transformer being a playable toy. The biggest difference between both manufacturer releases is in price and material use, where Hasbro is producing cheaper all plastic toys while Takara is the premium die-cast collector's item sold at limited quantities.
I was a Transformer fans in the 80's but never before any Transformer could line of toys captivate me as this. Takara's release is a mind-blowing 1:24 scale die-cast vehicle with rubber tires, classic generation one head sculpt and transformation method, extremely well articulated robot and details worth being a collector's item.
As oppose to Hasbro's Alternator, Takara's Binaltech is a delicate collector's item unsuitable to frequent transformation as the paint reportedly to be easily chip off from the surface.
