This is a cool release of Binaltech Series featuring
Grimlock transformable to Ford Mustang GT 2005
version. In Transformer G1, Grimlock used to be an
Autobot Tyrannosaurus Rex. Takara’s choice of an
older Ford Mustang car is a good one complimenting
well to Grimlock style. Grimlock also comes with 2
secret weapons, which are its engine transformable
to gun and a hidden sword under the transmission
axle.
Packaging
Grimlock comes packaged in the usual Binaltech box
design with clear plastic on all but the rear side
of the box. The vehicle is safely resting in clear
plastic tray secured with twisted wires. At the
bottom of the box located a plastic wrapper
containing an instruction manual, Grimlock ID card
and the Ford Mustang engine. Normally, the engine
come installed on the vehicle and I really could not
figure out why Takara packaged it separately in the
plastic wrapper.
The instruction manual is colored and 10-pages in volume. It contains brief introduction and schematic diagram as instruction to transform the vehicle into a robot. The manual is in Japanese only. Like Meister, the schematic diagram is in black on white, which is easier to read.
Vehicle
Grimlock in vehicle mode is a faithfully 1:24 scaled
replica of Ford Mustang GT 2005 version. The vehicle
is a 2-door coupe colored in satin silver. Its hood
can opened revealing its mini replica of the 300
horsepower V8 engine. The engine is removable and
transformable into its secret weapon gun. Notice
that the engine and its hood are much bigger and
longer than others as it is featuring the classical
Mustang “long hood” design. This Takara’s Binaltech
compose of die-cast at all four sides of the vehicle
except for its bumpers and all other parts in robot
mode.
All wheels rotate and both front wheels steer in union thanks to its magnetic system as first featured in BT-01 Smokescreen. All wheels come with 5–spoke silver sport rims with pattern tires. Thankfully, this time the tires do not come with the word “Cybertronian”. The bottom of the car comes attached with Grimlock’s sword, an unconventional weapon never before seen in any Binaltech prior releases.
The side comes with flat black side mirror, plated in silver, although not reflective, mimicking a real side mirror. Both side doors are can be open, showing its detailed interior. The interior come decorated with a detailed dashboard with a left-hand drive 3-spokes steering wheel, gearshift and a hand brake. The front seats come in red orange and are foldable during transformation.
At the rear comes decorated with the legendary Mustang badge with two tri-bar tail light. The license plate only appears at the rear. It printed with an Autobot logo and the word “GRIMLOCK”. Although the Mustang is done as close as possible to the real stuff but an ugly and conspicuous divider line spanning from its rear windscreen all the way down to its bumper is it only noticeable flaw preventing it from getting a perfect score.
Robot
Transforming Grimlock from Vehicle mode
to robot is slightly confusing. It requires a lot of
twisting and rotation of parts. Grimlock in robot
mode is appealing as it comes with not one but two
weapons, which is a sword and a double barrel gun
transform from its engine. The Grimlock head sculpt
is following the design in Transformers G1 but with
an added twist. The head comes with a clear blue
visor giving an upgrade from the old look. One
peculiarity that I noted is that its head looks like
¼ of it is missing when viewed from sideway.
In overall, Grimlock in robot mode is a hulk with broad shoulders and arms. Both legs are made of the second half of the car and its feet are form from the car seats. A large piece of the car bottom is dangling at the rear. I would prefer if Grimlock employs the design in Meister, where that large piece can be folded and at least keep at above knee level. Its elbows and hips are ball jointed.
One interesting new feature on Grimlock is its steering mechanism. It is employing a non magnetic method. It is done by employing 2 moveable piece of plastic on each side of its arms. When both arms joint together, those moveable pieces are connected. When the wheels turn, the connected piece pushes the wheels to turn in union.
Conclusion
I spotted this item while shopping at Berjaya Time
Square and Low Yat Plaza but the purchase is made at
the latter mentioned place for a lower price.
