Introduction
This is a classic reissue of Optimus Prime / Convoy base on its classic 80's Transformers G1
toy line. Every since the original G1 Optimus Prime has been sold as high as USD 3000 at
Ebay in mint condition, Takara took the opportunity and has kept re-issuing this G1 Prime. I
believe this is the second re-issue for the past 2 to 3 years. This is good news for fans
but definitely bad news for collectors who have been keeping their original Prime in good
condition for the past 20 years.
Packaging
Optimus Prime comes packaged in a box designed very reminiscent but not identical to the original
release. It comes packaged in a rectangular box with a small cut out window displaying Optimus Prime in its
vehicle mode.
The content is rested in a plastic tray along with its accessories including a roller, a runner of
plastic missiles, beam rifle, a short piece of rubber hose and a small plastic bag containing Optimus
Prime's hands, a half dozen wheels for roller and 2 plastic pieces for its refueling pump.
The instruction sheet is packed in a small plastic bag along with an ID card and a sticker sheet tapered
to the back of the box.

Transformations & Robot Mode
This is a design from 2 decades ago. Do not expect spectacular transformation sequence here comparing to
the newer version of Optimus Prime. Even Classic Prime comes with better transformation gimmick. Although
comes in a simple 3 steps transformation, there is always something nostalgic about it for an old geezer
like me.
I never have a G1 Optimus Prime and use to dream about it ever since I am a kid. It is the
ultimate cool toy then. As time flies over 2 decades, this must-have ultra-cool Optimus Prime is now look
like, how should I put it, a piece of red brick. The details are not enough. Body proportion is out and
square-ish. Head sculpt is not as seen in anime. Articulation is downright disappointing. There are never enough
gimmicks on the robot itself.
This original is not at fault. I blame it on me being overly pampered by the various later versions of
Optimus Prime.
Next subject that I will like to highlight is its metal composition. As in the original G1 Optimus Prime,
this also comes with some form of metal roughly about 30% or less of the robot. Metal parts include the
windscreen and the chrome thigh. Unless I am wrong, metals are not where else to be found.

Trailer, Command Center and Repair Dock
Optimus Prime in vehicle mode is acceptable while the robot mode is somewhat unsatisfactory.
However, what makes Prime special is his trailer. It comes with 4 transformation mode namely trailer,
turreted trailer, command center and repair dock.
The trailer splits open into command center where there are the moveable main turret. The turret’s
cockpit opens revealing gunner seat. The turret can be loaded with the missiles at both side and launch-able
with the usual spring mechanism. The side of the turret is installed with a rotatable radar dish and an
articulated work claw. There is a turning gear at the back of the turret to facilitate the rotation of the
radar dish. 2 command seats at molded at both side of turret.
Under the turret comes a powerful spring mechanism that launches its roller out of its bay triggered by a
level at the back.

Oh uh! Where is the matrix? |
Conclusion
There are various version of G1 Optimus Prime out there but there are not many that comes a trailer that
loaded with captivating gimmicks such as this G1 Prime. MP-4’s trailer is a half-cooked design slaps in to
the suck more money from fans whereas the closest contender will be the too small THS-02 Convoy.
If you are as forgiving as I do on the robot mode and see the real fun value at the trailer then this is
one heck of an item that deserves a place in your collections.
This item is purchased from a local shop at Berjaya Time Square.
