KFCHONG 08th MS Team is now 4 years old!

This year is coming to an end and this is the time that I will like to do wrap up and share some of the statistics.

This site on this year as of to date have about 23,000 unique visitors, 220,000 page viewed, 2.48 million hits and 30 GB bandwidth used so far.

I have most visitors from U.S. follows by Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Indonesia and only then Malaysia.

What is popular on this site?
The most popular section on this site is still Bandai's Saint Cloth Myth. Saint Seiya fans are everywhere! A huge crowd is coming from mostly U.S. and from the European community. I believe this is owing to the "Knight of Zodiac" airing on U.S. Cartoon Network and the already established huge crowd of Seiya's fans in Europe. Thank you for visiting!

SIC section is still going strong and the second most popular section although I have stop collecting for a while. I just cannot swallow those ugly Hibiki's figure but I do intend to start collecting those from Kamen Rider Blade series.

Optimus Prime / Convoy's visitors are coming in from search engine result. After more than 2 decades, Optimus Prime still has his charm.

Top 5 - Sixth Scale

This is quite a new section and a very expensive category. I have been spending quite a lot in this category this year. I am spending on this category is owing to a few reasons.

Firstly, I am sick with the re-issues after re-issues from the Japanese toy manufacturers. It brings down the resell value and making it not worth collecting anymore. 12-inch figure are usually limited item where once they are sold out, they remain sold out.

Secondly, I do believe the trend will go towards 1/6 scale action doll. In 2005 and 2006, PVC figures are selling hot. They are so competitive that fixed pose PVC figures are offering more and more options and gimmicks like from partial to full nudity. A fixed pose figure is still a fixed pose figure. Eventually, the sculptors will run out of ideas and a portion PVC collectors will eventually grow bored with it. I do see manufacturers like Megahouse, Azone International, Medicom and Aoshima are jumping on the band wagon, releasing more and more action dolls of anime characters.

Mostly visitor in this section are coming from forum.play.com.my for the Sidehows Star Wars figure. Cool Girl's Midori Washio mostly coming from sgcollect.com.

Top 5 - Models

Just like last year, unpainted models are still going strong on this section. There are still a lot more people who like learning to build an unpainted model rather than building a painted model.

I am happy that there are more people interested in taking photos of their toy collections comparing to last year. Maybe I should write an article on how to use a DSLR in the coming future.

Saint Cloth Myth - Griffin Minos
The third and the last Judges from Hades.

The photos taken with higher exposure compensation (EV) to to get a white background. This is helps a lot in post-processing where very minimal white balance adjustment is made.

Photo Updates:
Bad photographer meaning badly taken photos. Getting the right white balance on a white background is harder than I thought. Some of the following photos are tinted with gray or blue on the background and the photos are adjusted in a photo editor.

I made a wrong choice of background. Her face color is too near to the background color and quite difficult to adjust.

Minimal adjustment made to make the background pure white.

Only accessories, outfit and figure body shots are adjusted. The rest are untouched.

Lacus Clyne Action Doll
Took this when I just got my camera. Experimenting with mahjong paper as backdrop but found out it is not as good as the good old mounting board. I have to tediously cut out all the background to make her white.

Saint Cloth Myth - Pandora Limited Edition
The gray tinted background is adjusted and added some shadow/highlight to bring out the details.

This is the last from Equip & Prop series that is left outstanding. I am bored looking at too many Golden Wolf and a Silver one is refreshing for a change.

Some More Rambling on Photography:
I believe I have finally got the hang of the kit lens after playing with it for a week, experimenting the settings on a black backdrop and then a white backdrop.

Now the process have to be repeated again with the new macro lens. This Equip & Prop Vol 3 - Zero & Silva is taken with the new lens and I am yet to get the correct configurations for it. I am not saying that I am not happy with the quality of the photos. It is just that I need to go back to the hassle of making adjustment in Photoshop. Beside controlling the color and contrast, I also need to improve my skill on focusing, making use of DOF (depth of field) plus learning more on subject framing and composition.

Note that some shots has certain section goes out of focus. This happens when I move in for a close-up shot and this is where the DOF comes barging in. It goes bokeh beyond my control or to be more precise, I am yet to learn controlling the focus of this lens. Ouch!

I have been keeping this guy MIB for quite some time and never gotten around to open this up until recently. A perfect guinea pig for my new macro lens.

More Rambling on Photography:
The long awaited pay day had finally arrived!!! I have been looking for a macro lens and read a lot of forum reviews on lenses. I have short listed and come to the point having to make a decision between Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro and Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro USM.

Both lens has good reviews and with somewhat a similar price tag. I have been struggling with the decision for a while. Judging from that this is my first lens, I decided to go for Canon although it is RM200 higher. The lens does not extend out like what Tamron does, lightweight, comes with a silent Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and a full time manual focus.

Overall, this is a very good non-"L" prime lens and the images taken are deliciously super sharp and the contrast is excellent. When I got my new EOS 400D at 10.1 mega pixel with the 18-55mm kit lens, I thought the images are sharp enough until I got to use this lens. Of course, one can hardly tell the difference on a resized 600 pixel image but then at 200% zoom of the original image (for those who has a sharp eye, at 100% zoom), the optical quality is obvious between the 2 lenses. Moreover, I got to do some nice bokeh, which is impossible on a kit lens.

I notice that slight vignetting is visible at f/2.8 wide open but it is way much better comparing to my kit lens at f/5.6 wide open. Vignetting is hardly noticeable once set at around f/6.3 on my situation.

This lens might not have a good enough working distance for insect photography but I do believe this is perfect for Product Photography, which is what I am doing here on this site. I am already sitting about 3 to 4 feet away from the subject in order to fit in the entire 20cm height subject in a horizontal shot. I do not wish to sit further behind with a 100mm or a 180mm macro lens. I guess the 60mm focal length is about right for me.

All the photos are uploaded without any Photoshop manipulation other than resizing. These are just amateur shots. I just hope the pro won't be rolling down the floor laughing at it. :-P I already got a few constructive criticism on how to take better shots from my friend and ex-colleague, Dino Ang, on those photos.

Note that Equip & Prop Vol 2 - Garo & Madoubi is taken with this new lens. New lens meaning a complete new settings and I am yet to get use to this. There are some minor contrast and leveling adjustment made to the images. Other than that no other adjustment are made.

I am getting the hang to my camera and 18-55 mm kit lens. The shots are taken using mirror lockup, timer function and custom white balance at ISO 100. The photos are published with only auto-contrast applied and no other adjustment are made.

I am loving my new Canon EOS 400D!

More Photography Junk:
I am  not satisfied with the previous results on taking photos with a white background. It is more complicated than a black backdrop. I have to be careful not be overexpose the subject while the backdrop has to be as white as possible. This requires a slower shutter speed and this triggered another set of problem; namely camera shake. The default EOS400 comes with a timer but I finding it being ridiculously slow. Taking a single shot requires 10 seconds timer delay plus not to mention the 1 to 2 seconds shutter speed.

I am trying out my 400D's mirror lockup custom function over here and it work exceptionally well for me. It cut down the timer to 2 seconds and camera shake is minimal on a tripod.

I am now somewhat happy with Dubhe Siegfried's batch of photos. Almost all photos there are simply resized, cropped and auto-contrast using Photoshop before publishing it on this site. No other adjustment made except for one or two badly taken shots.

This is an overpriced sixth scale action doll from Mega House. The concept of making use of anime head sculpt on an action doll is interesting but the price tag do put a lot of people off (maybe except for the Japanese).

Some Photography Junk:
I am took the previous 2 figures, Andromeda Shun Final Bronze and Pandora Limited Edition at ISO 800. The end results are slightly grainy when viewing in full size (3888 x 2592). I am experimenting with this Lacus Clyne and took her photos at ISO 100. The end results are much better with lesser grains.

There are white balance issues on the previous 2 photo sessions. I am not really satisfied with the pre-defined white balance on the camera. The colors are just not right. I am trying out the custom white balancing settings on my camera here and the color is much more accurate now. The photos are publish without going through the hassle of making color adjustment.

I hope every one who come to this site is enjoying the visit here. After 4 years plus, this site is growing bigger and bigger and up to a point where I no longer have enough hosting space to store all the photos and articles that I did.

I considering 3 choices here:

A) Stop updating this site, leave it at it is and get a life!
B) Dish out more of my personal wealth to expand this site and continue to work like a zombie.

I am having problem with the use-to-be-glossy leather on this figure. It scaled, chipped, fall-off, melted and smear the rest of the fabric after keeping it for 3 years. I manage to recondition this item as the glossy leather is not widely use. The same cannot be said to my other JET and SKY as they are completely damaged now. I do not think I can recommend BBI version of Cy-Girl (it is out-of-production anyway) so get yourself the Takara version instead. Cheaper is never better. *sigh*

Finally, I compiled something after 4 years on modeling! This took me so long just because those listed tools must be personally "proven" to be workable before I put it up onto the list. I hope this will help those who just started on modeling.

- Cheapest Path Getting into Gundam Plastic Modeling (A Beginner Shopping List)
Another article that require me to accumulate 4 years of modeling experience just to write it. This should be a good enough beginner shopping list for Gundam modeling.

Just in case you did not notice, I am not a perfectionist modeler but I have been doing different type of modeling and trying out all sort of techniques all this while. Almost no 2 models are being built same way (there are always something new!). All these work are just to derives the 2 articles here. The steps or path mentioned are guarantee to be achievable and I have working proof for it! ^_^ Hope these helps.

I am now itching all over for modeling and this is my latest completed Gundam MG. It comes with photos and WIP.

I have done 2 unpainted mechas in a row and begin to suspect my painting skill might go rusty. So, took a weekend project to paint this in camouflage. This is my first attempt to do camouflage. It's a disaster but at least I learn something out of it.

As time goes by, I could not remember how my resin kit look like. I guess having some small photos help me to decide what to build next.

Another superb GFF figures from Kajime Hatoki and the gimmick here is the dry transfer decal for doing your own marking.

I miss out 4 resin kits that I owned. Now it is 14 in total.

Modeling Progress:
- Ultra-detail mecha from Armored Core, Mirage C01-GAEA is done. Like RX-78-2 Gundam OYW, this is another no paint model. Awaiting to take photos.

- 1/6 Ryoufu Housen (Griffon 2005) is painted and awaiting final assembly. I won't publish this so soon. I am trying to make her a nice base but it is not ready yet. I think it should take another 1 - 2 weeks to complete.

This site is old and tech-wise, this has little user interactivity comparing to the newer blog or nuke sites. I always wish to have a comment block on each page so that you guys can post your comments. I did search high and low for free codes but none can be found that suit my requirement.

Well, this leave me no choice but to pick up PHP and code my own page comment function. Not the best of breed but I am quite happy with it.

I hope you guys can leave your valuable comments at the bottom of a review article and tell us what you think.
